Term 5 - Character Design and Development - The links that follow are my coursework assignments completed through my college education thus far. For each I will provide a brief description of the assignment and present my completed assignment.

Week 1: The Nature of Character Design and Research

    In this week's assignments 1-3, you will create a copyright free version of an already established character design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Student Version of Source Character, Part 2: Roughs

      Modify two of the thumbnails into rough character designs of your own version, as per specifications provided by instructor.

      Choose two of these thumbnails and transform them into rough versions of the your own version of the original design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Student Version of Source Character, Part 3

      In this stage you will complete one rough into a finished, single drawing of your own version of the character as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 2: Character Types and Their Uses and Library Research

    Character Type and Character Modification

    This assignment will be completed in two steps. The first step is to create a character that is a basic type such as hero or villain. as per specifications provided by instructor.

    1. Define the problem: designing a character type designs that fits an established type niche (hero, villain, etc. as per specifications provided by instructor.

    2. Thumbnail several versions of each of the design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    3. Choose two of these thumbnails, one per each character design (character type and then character modified), and transform each into rough versions as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Project 1: Mythological Character: Step 1 Referring to Project 1 under Course Home: Mythological Character, complete Assignment Step 1 as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 3: Conceptualization and Construction Techniques

    Brainstorming

    You will try several techniques for coming up with ideas for a character design as per specifications provided by instructor.

      Word association

       Use of symbols

      Inkblots

      Use written and thumbnail interpretations in a sketchbook format.

      You will then thumbnail ideas from these various triggers and group them together by which technique was responsible for a particular set of thumbnails as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Gesture and Module Methods

    Using some of the thumbnails from Assignment 1, Brainstorming, choose two of them to practice as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Project 1: Mythological Character

    Refer to Project 1 under Course Home for a complete description of the Mythological Character project.

      After conducting research, you will then proceed to draw a number of thumbnail sketches of both the character and any props and costumes as per specifications provided by instructor.

      Upon choosing one (or more) thumbnails as possible solutions for the character, you will then develop this sketch into a somewhat more finished version as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 4: Synthesis: What It Is and How to Use It

    Substitution

    Take two previously completed character or creature designs from Weeks One through Three, you will create two completely new design solutions as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Modification

    Take one of your previous character or creature designs from Weeks One through Three, and by using two synthetic techniques, produce two design variations as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Project 1: Mythological Character

    Referring to Project 1 under Course Home: Mythological Character, continue working on the mythological character design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    2-4 page written research report

     1 page character/storyline description.

     Three thumbnail sketches per view (also submitted earlier in course).

     One model sheet including two different views of mythological human-like character redesign.

Week 5: Style and Refinement and Library Research

    Saturday Morning Character

    This assignment ties in with Assignments 2 and 3 for this week.

    This first assignment takes you through the process of developing a generic figure and transforming it into a character reminiscent of ‘Saturday morning' style animation characters through reductive design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Style Change

    This second assignment will be to re-design the ‘Saturday morning' character from Assignment 1 by applying an industry style of your choice to the character.

    Props and Costumes

    This third assignment will be to modify the generic character from Assignment 1 by applying a variety of props and costumes to the character to create three variations.

    Project 2: Hybrid Character Design

    Your first task will be to investigate various visual sources for your hybrid design as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 6: Expression and its Application to Character Design

    Facial Expressions

    This first assignment uses a mirror or a person as a subject for drawing various facial expressions as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Silhouette

    In this second assignment you will create three silhouette character designs as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 7: Anatomy and Locomotion

    Anatomical Overlay

    This first assignment takes a previously completed character or creature design, and, by using a transparent overlay, shows the chosen design in action as a skeletal as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Locomotion

    The second assignment will take a previous existing character or creature design and place into at least an eight-step gestural locomotion sequence as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 8: Resource Examples: Prehistoric and Alien Design

    This first assignment takes your research of prehistoric resources and applies it to creature design solutions as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Alien World Design

    This second assignment requires you to 1) develop an explanatory document describing an alien world design and to 2) create an alien character/creature design as per specifications provided by instructor.

Week 9: Summary of Character Design Elements and Techniques

    For this assignment, you are to draw a single view of an original character design as per specifications provided by instructor.

    Project 2: Hybrid Character Design
